Iran, whose official name is Islamic Republic of Iran
(Iran-e Eslami Jomhuriyat or Yomhūrī-ye Eslami-ye Iran);, is a
state of the Middle East (Asia). From the first millennium BC until 1935
was known in the West as Persia, although nowadays this name is still
valid and accepted along with Iran. It borders Pakistan and Afghanistan
to the east, Turkmenistan to the northeast, the Caspian Sea to the north
and Azerbaijan and Armenia to the northwest, Turkey and Iraq on the west
coast and finally the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman to the south. The
eighteenth largest country in the world with an area of 1,648,195 km2,
Iran has a population of seventy million. The name Iran is a cognate of
Aryan, and means "land of the Aryans." It is an Islamic republic since
the 1979 referendum which abolished the hereditary monarchy. Iran is
divided into thirty provinces (Ostan). The provinces are divided into
counties (Shahrestan ) and are subdivided into districts (Bakhsh) and
secondary districts (dehestān).
